Pride in Skid Row

I led the creative direction and execution of a portrait campaign for LA CAN’s 2025 Pride celebration in Skid Row, Los Angeles. The work was designed to celebrate joy, resistance and individuality in a community too often erased from the larger Pride narrative.

I invited participants to respond to one question, “What does Pride mean to you?” The result is a visual archive of portraits and reflections, and a collective expression of belonging. More than documentation, this campaign reframes Skid Row as an important voice in the Pride movement and a powerful site of cultural leadership.

“In a space where so many narratives about our community are shaped from the outside, Melissa helped us take that power back. Her work is strategic, visual and grounded in real trust, which is why it resonates so widely with our community.”
